Dr. Bryan M. Swanson is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon serving patients in Tacoma and Puyallup, Washington. In addition to providing comprehensive oral surgery, he has advanced fellowship training in pediatric craniomaxillofacial surgery and the treatment of cleft and craniofacial conditions.

Education and Dental Training

Dr. Swanson was raised in Federal Way, Washington, and attended Decatur High School. During high school, he decided to pursue dentistry with the goal of becoming an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

He studied biology at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, before earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

During dental school, Dr. Swanson participated in the University of Washington’s Regional Initiatives in Dental Education program, commonly known as RIDE. The program prepares dental professionals to address the oral health needs of rural and underserved communities throughout Washington and the surrounding region.

As part of the RIDE program, Dr. Swanson completed clinical training at a community dental clinic in Wenatchee during his final year of dental school.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency

After dental school, Dr. Swanson entered a four-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency through UCSF Fresno in Fresno, California.

His comprehensive specialty training included:

• Cleft and craniofacial surgery
• Treatment of benign and malignant head and neck tumors
• Facial and jaw reconstruction
• Treatment of facial trauma
• Orthognathic and corrective jaw surgery
• Dental implant surgery and reconstruction
• Office-based anesthesia and general anesthesia

During his residency, Dr. Swanson developed a particular interest in cleft and craniofacial surgery and chose to pursue additional subspecialty training.

Pediatric Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Fellowship

Following residency, Dr. Swanson completed fellowship training in pediatric craniomaxillofacial surgery at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida.

Craniomaxillofacial surgery focuses on conditions affecting the skull, jaws, and face. During his fellowship, Dr. Swanson received extensive training and experience in:
