Dr. Guillermo E. Chacon is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon serving Tacoma, Puyallup, and surrounding South Sound communities. He provides the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with particular expertise in dental implants, bone reconstruction, corrective jaw surgery, facial trauma, cosmetic facial surgery, and anesthesia.
Education and Surgical Training
Dr. Chacon was born and raised in San José, Costa Rica. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Costa Rica in 1990. He then completed a required one-year community dentistry internship through the Costa Rican Ministry of Health before entering private general dentistry practice in San José.
From 1993 through 1995, Dr. Chacon completed a two-year fellowship in oral implantology through the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.
He continued his surgical education with a one-year oral and maxillofacial surgery internship at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry from 1995 through 1996.
In 1996, Dr. Chacon entered the four-year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program at the University of Washington. His residency provided advanced training in orthognathic surgery, facial trauma reconstruction, dental implant surgery, and anesthesia.
Academic Leadership and Research
After completing his residency in 2000, Dr. Chacon joined the full-time faculty at The Ohio State University. He was appointed director of the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program in 2002 and served as department chair from 2006 through 2008.
Dr. Chacon currently maintains an academic affiliation with the University of Washington Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as an Affiliate Professor.
He has extensive research experience and has authored multiple publications, particularly in dental implants and bone reconstruction. Dr. Chacon also lectures nationally and internationally about dental implant surgery, bone regeneration, facial trauma, and cosmetic facial surgery.
